5 things a Travel Agent should always keep at their desk

Just like in any other profession, there are certain tools of the trade that make life as a Travel Agent so much easier. And I'm not just talking about a computer, a desk, a chair and a phone.

Just like in any other profession, there are certain tools of the trade that make life as a Travel Agent so much easier. And I’m not just talking about a computer, a desk, a chair and a phone.

I’m talking about a bunch of other necessities that Travel Agents have at their work stations, like all the time.

Here are five of the most common items you’ll find in, or on, an experienced Travel Agent’s desk.

1. Chocolate – lots of the stuff

Look inside any seasoned Travel Agent’s top draw and chances are you’ll be met with a sea of tinsel wrapping in every colour of the confectionary rainbow. Mars bars, Snickers, Cherry Ripes – you’re going to find all the big boys in here.

And why? Well, Travel Agents are going to need something to get them through the dreaded 3pm slump, aren’t they? Or they could simply reach for their…

2. Coffee – make it a double shot

Ah, that sweet brown brew. Is there nothing more rejuvenating than a nice cup of coffee? As Travel Agents, you’re probably going to have at least one of these caffeine pots on your desk at all times.

Whether you’re a Flat White fiend, a Latte lady, or a Long Black lackey, don’t you all agree that coffee and being a Travel Agent go together like cheese and…

3. Wine – red, white, whatever

Want to know the real secret to a Travel Agent’s capacity to deal with price beaters, tyre kickers and members of the general public who find it necessary to ask whether that two-night Rome hotel special for $89 includes flights? Wine – and plenty of it.

It’s no secret that drinking wine regularly is great for the heart and can actually make you live longer. A similar phenomenon happens in the world of travel, where Travel Agents who regularly drink seem to be the ones who can stay in the game longer. Coincidence? I think not. It’s what keeps the stress at bay. That and…

4. A stress ball – preferably industrial strength

It really only takes one hand to type into Galileo or Amadeus or to click through seemingly endless booking portals, which means Travel Agents can use that other hand to squeeze the living bejesus out of a stress ball – an occupational necessity.

The best ones – the most highly sought after – are the red ones with a mouse that looks like a plane on it, underscored by the “W” word. Come on, you guys know who I’m referring to here! If not, you’re obviously not listening, which means you must be wearing your…

5. Headphones – music can make the pain go away

As the late Frank Zappa once said, Music is the best. Yeah, you probably don’t know or care who that is, but surely you agree with his statement. When you’ve got lots to do and you can’t be interrupted, it’s time to plug-in and get into serious productivity mode.

Whether you love to listen to Beyoncé, Bob Dylan or the Beach Boys, whip out those headphones from your top draw and let the music wash over you like a warm bath. Before you know it the day will be over, and you’ll get to return home for some well deserved rest.

Or the pub.

You are a Travel Agent after all!

What do you keep at your desk? We’d love to know…
