Meditation ain’t just for monks, hippies and spiritual types. It’s for everyone, especially travel agents who are constantly under stress and need a way to unwind that doesn’t involve alcohol…

Even a short 10-minute meditation has been shown to have positive effects for the chronically stressed. And the best thing is that such a short meditation can be easily incorporated into every agent’s life, no matter how busy they are.

Here are five ways travel agents can meditate at work without anyone knowing…

1. ON THE WAY TO WORK

med2

If you commute to work via public transport, you really don’t have any excuse not to meditate for at least 10-minutes.

The popular meditation app Headspace will guide you through simple 10-minute meditations as your train or bus makes its way to work. And don’t worry: no one will even know you’re meditating as you sit there with your eyes closed.

2. ON THE WAY TO THE TOILET

When you think of meditation, you probably think of someone sitting on a cushion in the lotus position, back straight, with their palms facing the sky. But meditation isn’t a body position, and it isn’t a pose. Meditation is fundamentally a mental attitude that treats thoughts as temporary phenomena and uses the breath as an anchor to stay in the present moment.

I say all this because it’s also possible to meditate when walking to the toilet (or even to work). But instead of using the breath as your anchor point, you focus on the sensations in your feet as you walk to the toilet. This is called walking meditation.

Check out this video above for a demo.

3. SITTING ON THE TOILET

med4

Gross?! No, hear me out!

If you can afford to spend an extra few minutes on the toilet, why not use that time to focus on your breathing and de-stress a little? It sure beats checking your Facebook newsfeed or swiping through Tinder…

Studies have shown that even a few minutes of meditation can improve your overall productivity and well-being. Meditate on the toilet, and you’ll feel lighter in more ways than one…

4. WHILST AT LUNCH

med5

I know, I know. You don’t always even get a lunch break. And when you do, you want to spend that time eating, catching up on social media, responding to personal emails and messages, or just relaxing.

But remember the science people! Even a few minutes of breathing and meditation can have a significant effect on your productivity and overall well-being. So isn’t it worth replacing a few minutes of mindless scrolling on Facebook with a few minutes of meditation?

Head to a local park and sit on a bench whilst focusing on your breath. You’ll feel like a new person when back in the office.

5. WHEN ON HOLD…

med7

The next time you’re put on hold with a wholesaler or airline, think of it as a blessing in disguise: you now can practice a little meditation! Sure, it’s  normal for us to want to reply to emails or type up quotes whilst on hold. But chances are you’ll make small mistakes that could end up eating up more of your time in the end.

Instead, why not use some of that waiting time for a quick meditation. Focus on your breathing or the sensation of your chest rising and falling with your breath. When they finally pick up the phone, you’ll be completely relaxed and ready to attend to whatever needs doing.

Do you meditate? How do you incorporate it into your busy life? Let us and other agents know in the comments below.
