In the tiny Bavarian hamlet of Oberammergau, thousands of people from all over the world meet every 10 years to witness a powerful stage performance called the Passion Play – a magnificent work of art performed by 2,000 local Oberammergau residents.

1. IT’S A PASSION PLAY (THE STORY OF JESUS)

This epic stage performance tells the story of the life and death of Jesus Christ through dramatic performances, beautiful music and choral accompaniment.

It’s a magnificent work of art, paying homage to perhaps the most influential figure in Western civilisation.

2. THE PLAY RUNS FOR APPROX. 6-7 HOURS

The Passion Play is an epic story about Jesus Christ, so you’d expect the play to last longer than 30 minutes.

In fact, it lasts for about six to seven hours. But fear not, as you’ll have a dinner break mid-way through, and Collette guests will be taken to a local restaurant to feast on local Bavarian fare – yum!

3. ITS BEEN HELD EVERY DECADE SINCE 1634

If you thought the Lion King had been on stage a long time, then you’ll be absolutely gobsmacked to learn that the Passion Play has been performed every decade since 1634 – that’s nearly 400 years!

According to local lore, the villagers made an appeal to God in the early 17th century to stop the village succumbing to the Bubonic Plague. They vowed that if God saved them, they would perform a Passion Play every 10 years. Since making that vow, not a single person died of the Plague.

4. ONLY LOCALS CAN BE PART OF THE PRODUCTION

Keeping the authenticity of the nearly 400 year play in check, a cast of around 2,000 locals are only allowed to be part of the production of the Passion Play.

The Passion Play is performed in an auditorium that seats around 4,500 people, with the comfortable seats set on an incline, providing everyone with a good view.

5. ONLY A FINITE NUMBER OF TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE
