Once you’re home, you’re likely to be in a vulnerable mental state after experiencing such excitement as riding trains through rice plantations in Sri Lanka, partying 24/7 in Ibiza or getting the royal treatment in Bangkok.

Real life hits you like a sharp slap in the face, with the freedom and fun of travelling replaced by the dreariness of everyday life.

Normal life really feels sooo boring and you just don’t feel as alive as when you’re away exploring an exotic country and having new experiences.

Your job may seem boring. Your friends may seem boring. Mostly, your life, in general, may feel boring.

Yet as with all things, this feeling of post-travel blues won’t last forever. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything to get through it as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Here’s my own personal strategy for getting through the post-travel or famil blues when you’re back home after an incredible trip abroad.

1. WATCH A FUNNY MOVIE

To help take your mind off just how sucky being back home is compared to where you just came from, watch a movie that gets you laughing.

Just like the regular blues, a dose of [insert favourite comedian here] will flood your brain with serotonin and get you feeling okay again once you’re back in the office and pining over what has now passed.

2. PLAN YOUR NEXT TRIP

Part of the reason that being back home feels so crappy is that all we see in front of us are months of being stuck in the same old environment doing the same old things. And of course, this will make us feel rather depressed, as we work in the travel industry and are hence rather nomadic and adventurous at heart.

But we all know that time has a way of passing rather fast, and what seems like ages away (e.g., your next holiday) will actually come around sooner than you’re comfortable with.

So start planning your next fantastic escape as soon as you get home.

Start reading guidebooks, start watching videos and documentaries, start asking your friends who have been there for their recommendations. Basically just set your mind on your next adventure instead of wallowing on the adventure that has passed.

Pray to the famil fairy and who knows, you could be on your travelling way again real soon if you play your cards right.

3. GET BACK INTO EXERCISING

If you’re like most people, as soon as you go away on a famil or on holiday you fall off the exercise wagon. This is totally justifiable though, especially if you’re on a famil as you simply don’t have the time to indulge in exercise.

But now that you’re back, it’s time to re-start that exercise regimen and get back into moving your body.

Go for a run. Do yoga. Join a group class at your local gym. Just get moving.

Exercise is one of those activities in life that you never really feel like doing until you’re doing it. But it’s totally worth getting up from the couch and putting on your runners as it will make you feel better and get your mind off your post-famil blues until it eventually goes away…
