It's a match! Malaysia Airlines sponsors Aussie tennis star

It's a 'match' made in heaven, as Malaysia Airlines signs up to sponsor rising Australian tennis star, 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios.

It’s a ‘match’ made in heaven, as Malaysia Airlines signs up to sponsor rising Australian tennis star, 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios.

The partnership was sealed at an exclusive event in Sydney yesterday and will see the airline fly the sporting star to his games around the world. He will also display the Malaysia Airlines logo on his tennis racquet bag.

In addition, the player and Malaysia Airlines are planning a number of marketing initiatives, which will be announced in the coming year. These will include tennis clinics with Nick, consumer and trade promotions and advertising.

Born in Australia to a Malaysian mother and a Greek father, Malaysia Airlines’ PK Lee said the collaboration fits because the two share a common Malaysian heritage and desire for excellence.

Mr Lee, the senior vice president Australia, added that he is sure that the charismatic Kyrgios is going to be universally admired as a quality player as well as a world-class sportsman.

“Nick is the future of Australian tennis and we’re thrilled to be helping him reach great heights.”

Operating with 81 flights per week to Malaysia from Australia and New Zealand, Malaysia Airlines is able to take Kyrgios to all tennis events across Australasia, Asia and Europe.

Speaking at the partnership launch in Sydney, Kyrgios said flying with Malaysia Airlines will ensure he is physically and mentally fresh and ready to compete with some of the world’s best players.

“A professional travel partner is as important as a good doubles partner.”

He added that having Malaysia Airlines as a main sponsor will keep his Malaysian heritage close to his heart.

“While I was born and brought up in Australia, I’m really proud of my family culture and very close to my Malaysian family.”

Over the last 12 months, Kyrgios has climbed the world ranking from 183 to 52 – making him the youngest player in the top 90s.

He also recently reached the third round of the US Open and won three ATP Challenger titles.
