If you’re flying in or out of Melbourne today, here’s a word of advice: check your flight status ASAP, because a thick fog blanketing the city has seen a number of flights delayed or even cancelled.

Qantas and Virgin Australia have cancelled several flights into Melbourne, while Jetstar confirmed two flights from Melbourne to the Gold Coast were cancelled and others were delayed.

Melbourne Airport issued flight restrictions this morning based on the forecast.

A number of domestic inbound flights are also delayed as they have been unable to land in the fog .

Air Traffic Control at Melbourne Airport have reduced the number of flights permitted to land per hour.

Buildings in the CBD are shrouded in low thick cloud with motorists also being warned to turn on their fog lights and take care on the roads.

The Bureau of Meteorology expects the morning fog and cloud to clear and give way to a mostly sunny day with areas of haze.

Melbourne Airport is advising that all passengers flying in and out of Melbourne this morning should check the status of their flight with their airline before heading to the airport.
