South Australia’s people and its economy are set to receive a generous $41 million boost in the visitor economy thanks to Qatar Airways’ new daily services.

Launching from Doha today, it is the airline’s fourth Australian destination following Perth, Melbourne and the recently launched Sydney flights.

South Australia’s Tourism Minister Leon Bignell described the new direct service as a “great opportunity” for the state to strengthen its reputation as a must-see tourism destination.

He continued explaining it will play a vital role in the state reaching its $8 billion visitor economy goal by 2020 and create new opportunities for locals with 228 extra jobs across the destination.

“International visitors are critical to the state’s economy, and the State Government is committed to continuing to increase the number of international visitors.”

The daily flight will depart Doha at 8.55pm to arrive in Adelaide at 4.25pm the next day. It will the return at 9.15am to arrive in Doha at 4.50am the following day.

The A350-900 will be utilised on the route, making it the first time the aircraft has ever landed in Australia. Guests will have a choice of 36 flat beds in Business Class with 180 degree recline or 247 spacious seats in economy.

Qatar Airways’ Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr Akbar Al Baker, said Adelaide is an “important addition” on the carrier’s network that will offer people of South Australia access to the “most modern aircraft in the industry”.

“[It will] connect them with 38 countries in Europe, 23 countries in Africa, and 27 destinations in the Middle East.”

Earlier this year, Akbar Al Baker revealed that the airline is looking at expansion options in Australia and could consider a fifth destination.
