Qantas and Jetstar have asked guests to not use the latest Samsung Personal Electronic Device (PED) model on its aircraft due to safety concerns.

In a statement, a Qantas Group spokesperson said the request not switch on or charge the device came after Samsung Australia recalled the product.

“Following Samsung Australia’s recall of the Samsung Galaxy Note7 Personal Electronic Device (PED), we are requesting that passengers who own them do not switch on or charge them inflight.”

The recall was issued only a few weeks after the phone was released in the market when a few buyers (around 35) reported faulty batteries were catching fire while charging.

According to Product Safety Australia, a “manufacturing process error” has resulted in overheating during phone charges, which may result in a potential fire or burn hazard.

Consumers currently using the phone have been advised by the government body to power down their device and return it to its place of purchase.

Earlier this year, flight attendants on a Qantas flight jumped into action to extinguish flames when a phone sparked a fire on a flight from Sydney to Los Angeles.

The mobile device burst into flames when it fell into the passenger’s reclining mechanism. The traveller attempted to recline his seat to retrieve the phone, but instead crushed the product and causing it to set fire.
