Qantas says "no" to the handlebar moustache

A new set of uniform guidelines from the Flying Kangaroo, which bans handlebar moustaches and chewing gum, has angered some Qantas pilots who are claiming that the new standards are too strict.

A new set of uniform guidelines from the Flying Kangaroo, which bans handlebar moustaches and chewing gum, has angered some Qantas pilots who are claiming that the new standards are too strict.

The new guidelines were introduced to meet and uphold Qantas’ image as a “trusted, experienced ambassador of the Qantas brand,” and follows the unveiling of a new uniform design earlier in April this year.

But according to the Sydney Morning Herald, a survey of almost 1,300 pilots by the Australian and International Pilots Association found that a majority of those surveyed were critical of some parts of the uniform, such as the wing design, epaulettes and the badge on their new white hats.

“They don’t call it a uniform, they call it a costume. Everyone has got the s**** that they are trying to make us wear this stuff.”

And it’s come to light that many pilots are also critical of the banning of the handlebar mo!

Joining the moustache on the black seat are bans against wearing backpacks, chewing gum, and drinking alcohol whilst in uniform. Pilots, according to the new standards which started in effect yesterday, are also required to wear their jackets regularly – unless it is more than 27 degrees or they are at airports in the tropics.

The new guidelines also state that only females may wear earrings, which must be “plain round pearl, silver, gold or diamond studs”.

But according Qantas Chief Pilot, Captain Richard Tobiano, the new uniform guidelines are necessary in maintaining a professional standard:

“[The uniforms are] a reflection of the professionalism of our pilots. I know that our pilots are very proud and feel privileged to fly for Qantas and to wear the uniform, which not only looks fantastic but also pays tribute to the history of our airline and profession.”

Captain Richard Tobiano, Qantas Chief Pilot, said in a statement.

Yesterday, Qantas gave us a taste of things to come by unveiling what the interior of its flagship 787-9 Dreamliner will look like, as well revealing an update to its iconic logo.
