Domestic travellers will have more access between Victoria and Queensland during the upcoming holiday period with QantasLink’s new seasonal Melbourne-Sunshine Coast services.

Running between 16 December to 21 January, the Qantas subsidiary will operate four return flights per week between the two destinations using the two-class Boeing 717 aircraft.

According to the airline, the seasonal service come after the success of the direct Sydney flight launched last year, which will increase with two extra return services on Saturday and Sunday from 30 October.

QantasLink Chief Executive Officer, John Gissing, said the Sunshine Coast proved to be a popular destination last summer amongst Aussies looking a for a local escape. He hopes new flights to Melbourne and extra services from Sydney would help meet increased demand.

“We’re always looking at opportunities to expand our network where there is demand, and of course promote the best of what Australia has to offer.”

“We’ve seen consistently high passenger numbers on our Sydney to Sunshine Coast services and this prompted us to introduce these seasonal flights.”

Visit Sunshine Coast’s acting CEO, Simon Latchford, welcomed the decision and expects it to not only provide more choice for travellers but serve as a big win for the Sunshine Coast tourism industry.

“We are confident the flights in December and January will really boost our Melbourne market, and hopefully this will lead to more extended services into 2017,” he said.
