Things are shaping up over at Canberra Airport as the gateway receives low-cost services to Melbourne.

Tigerair Australia confirmed new daily Canberra-Melbourne services this week, adding some 2,500 additional visitors seats per week between the two airports.

The announcement comes after years of redeveloping the airport to become a major international and domestic hub.

Earlier this year, the country’s capital also received its first international services through Singapore Airlines.

According to Tigerair Australia’s CEO, Rob Sharp, there’s been “overwhelming demand” for the airline to provide low-cost services between the two destinations.

He expects the new route to be popular among budget travellers, as well as leisure holidaymakers.

ACT Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, welcomed the announcement, saying it’ll generate some $17 million a year and create 124 jobs.

Details of the new service, including schedules, will be released later this week and tickets will also be on a sale before the end of the week.
