Virgin Australia practically gets the green light to launch Hong Kong services

Virgin Australia's proposed alliance with its Chinese investors has received draft approval from the Australian watchdog, moving the carrier one step closer to launching its first direct service to China.

Virgin Australia’s proposed alliance with its Chinese investors has received draft approval from the Australian watchdog, moving the carrier one step closer to launching its first direct service to China.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) practically gave the green light on the alliance with HNA Aviation, Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express this morning, which, once officially approved, will enable the airline to go through with its long-awaited Melbourne-Hong Kong service.

In a statement, Virgin Australia Group Chief Executive, John Borghetti, said the alliance would provide more competition and choice for Australian consumers travelling between Australia and China.

“When the alliance is in place, guests will enjoy an expanded network of destinations across Australia, mainland China and Hong Kong.”

“The alliance will also enable Virgin Australia to accelerate its access to the Chinese travel market and work with HNA in driving inbound visitors to Australia, which will benefit our tourism industry and broader economy.”

The alliance between Virgin Australia and the three China-based businesses was first proposed in June last year, when Air New Zealand sold its Virgin shares to the Chinese investors.

This was followed by the airline expressing intention to enter the Chinese market, but didn’t confirm Melbourne or Hong Kong as the departing ports until earlier this year.

Once the alliance receives final approval, Virgin Australia will be able to launch the direct service as scheduled on 5 July before considering other potential routes.

“We are particularly looking forward to implementing the first phase of the alliance and bringing Virgin Australia’s flights and outstanding customer service to Hong Kong with the launch of our Melbourne – Hong Kong services in July,” Mr Borghetti added.

Hong Kong will be the second international Virgin Australia adds to its network out of Melbourne this year, as it follows April’s re-launch to Los Angeles.
