Virgin Australia Group CEO John Borghetti said expanding the airline’s presence into Greater China was a key pillar of its international strategy, building on the positive momentum created since the launch of Virgin’s Melbourne-Hong Kong flights seven months ago.

“The new Sydney-Hong Kong service will link two global destinations and will allow Virgin Australia to further access the fastest growing and most valuable Australian inbound market, China, with our alliance partner Hong Kong Airlines.”

Virgin Australia Group CEO John Borghetti.

The service will also connect with Virgin Atlantic Airway’s flights to London.

Mr Borghetti said Virgin Australia had been “shaking up” the Australia-Hong Kong market service since it began its first Melbourne to Hong Kong flights last year.

While no date has been finalised, Virgin Australia said it planned to commence services between Sydney and Hong Kong in mid-2018, subject to the relevant approvals.
