The carrier will join a string of other airlines, including American Airlines and Qantas, when it starts fitting its Boeing 737-800, Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 with wi-fi technology mid-2017.

It’s good news for business travellers and social-media addicts, and if it’s as fast as Virgin America’s inflight Internet then it’ll also be good news for those who want to stream shows through Netflix.

Virgin Australia’s Group Chief Executive, John Borghetti, said inflight wi-fi could “transform air travel” by providing access to email, social media and even up-to-date information on connecting flights and travel plans.

“We believe our inflight wi-fi service will be popular with business travellers but also have widespread appeal for all our guests by enabling them to stay in touch and access the internet through their journey.”

“Our team is building what we think will be one of the world’s leading connectivity and entertainment networks, and we will work with strategic technology partners to offer our guests a truly personalised experience.”

More details on Virgin’s inflight product will be released by the end of 2016.
