The airline received a 4-star rating from the Diet Detective, which found Delta’s food to have the most nutritional value compared to its North American counterparts.

According to the research conducted by the health site, Delta is doing “an incredible job” at improving food and meal communication, making it a “clear leader among the big carrier by a long shot”.

Diet Detective said it was impressed by the carrier’s “transparency into ingredient and allergen information for customers” as well as its vast diet options with snacks available for non-GMO, vegans, gluten-free, kosher, vegetarian and lacto-ovo flyers.

Additionally, the average calorie count for the airline’s meals and snacks dropped from 527 to 480 within a year.

Following Delta on the health chart was Virgin America, which had an overall average calorie count of 340 and is the only North American airline to provide nutritional information on all its items.

Coming in third, was Air Canada (3.75 stars) for having food “every airline should be offering” such as Greek yogurt for breakfast, an avocado smash box and multigrain muesli bread, and JetBlue was in fourth place (3.75 stars) for its low-calorie and nutritious individual snacks as well as its transparency for nutritional information.

Rounding off the list were Alaska Air, United Airlines, American Airlines, Frontier Air, Southwest Airlines, Allegiant Air, Spirit Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.

Other interesting nutritional information revealed during research was the ever-increasing average number of calories per menu, which started at 360 in 2012 climbed to 388 in 2014, then up again to 392 in 2016 and 405 in 2017.
