Flights have been disrupted, trees uprooted, people injured and businesses forced to close as the severe Typhoon Hato sweeps across Hong Kong.

Flights have been disrupted, trees uprooted, people injured and businesses forced to close as the severe Typhoon Hato sweeps across Hong Kong.

The first category 10 storm to hit the city in almost five years arrived yesterday with heavy rainfall and destructive winds of up to 155km/h.

So far, some 34 people have experienced injuries and nearly 200 trees have been uprooted. Hong Kong’s local government issued flood alerts and set up 27 shelters in anticipation of evacuations, SBS News reported.

Travellers scheduled to fly to or from Hong Kong have been advised to check the status of their flight after some 450 services were cancelled yesterday.

In an online statement, Cathay Pacific said its services have resumed, however, guests scheduled to fly today may experience delays.

“All customers scheduled to fly this evening are urged to check Flight Status before proceeding to the airport.”

The airline said travellers can also check Manage Booking for any updates on their booking.

Qantas says its services are “operating normally at the moment” after cancelling flight QF117 from Sydney Hong Kong yesterday.

The airline said options are available to customers holding a valid ticket issued on/before 22 August 2017 who are affected by Tropical Cyclone Hato for travel to/from Hong Kong on/after 22 August and on/before 25 August 2017.

“Customers can visit our Flight Status page for updates on services and can contact us directly to discuss the options available to them.”

KarryOn has contacted Virgin Australia for updates on its services.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong International Airport’s cross border ferry service will also be affected today. Those with tickets are being told to contact ferry service providers for latest updates.
