You’ve likely seen the Sydney Opera House go completely green for St Patrick’s Day and Global Greening in the past but you’ve probably never seen it shine so proudly in pink before.

The one-of-a-kind building will light up like a flamingo on 3 November to showcase its support for the LGBT community and celebrate the launch of the program for 40 year anniversary Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

The fabulous pink Sydney Opera House exterior will be accompanied by a special glitter-filled, invite-only party to be held on the attraction’s Forecourt. The event will be hosted by Joel Creasey, and with special performances by Dannii Minogue, Samantha Jade, Trevor Ashley and more.

Mardi Gras Arts Chief Executive, Terese Casu, said she couldn’t think of a “more fabulous way” of announcing the new program than by “painting the most iconic building in Australia pink”.

“2017 has been a big year for the LGBTQI community worldwide, as we continue to strive for equality, and in some cases, fight for our very lives,” she said.

“The hot pink sails of the Sydney Opera House will be a dazzling beacon of queer recognition and celebration, beamed around the globe.”

Sydney Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, said the city is proud to be a long term support of the Mardi Gras as it represents diversity, creativity and openness.

“From the first march in 1978 to being one of the world’s great LGBTIQ festivals, the history of Mardi Gras is the history of the community’s long path to equality,” he said.

“We are proud to be a long term supporter of Mardi Gras and of the great welcome Sydney gives to visitors from all over the world.”
