Award-winning and luxuriously remote, Southern Ocean Lodge has welcomed news that Qantas will introduce direct flights to Kangaroo Island from Adelaide and Melbourne this year, making it even easier for guests to hop to a stylish escape down south.
Currently available for sale, Qantas’ new Kangaroo Island service commences on December 4, 2017 and offers three return flights weekly from Adelaide in QantasLink Dash 8 50-seat aircraft.
The summer-peak will see the service increase to five flights weekly to meet expected demand until Easter in April 2018.
Qantas has also introduced a summer-season flight direct from Melbourne, the first interstate flight to connect Kangaroo Island to a city outside South Australia.
The Melbourne service will operate 74-seat Q400 aircraft on three return flights weekly from December 17, 2017 to January 28, 2018.
Qantas’ new service means visitors to the island will have more options to align their regional flights neatly with both interstate and international flights, as well as to check through luggage and choose to use or earn points on frequent flyer loyalty programs.
Qantas’ new Kangaroo Island flights offer a complement to the daily service with multiple flights operated by Regional Express from Adelaide.
Southern Ocean Lodge owner James Baillie said the new service was indicative of the sustained growth in tourist visits to Kangaroo Island.
“When we first decided on the site for Southern Ocean Lodge in 2003, there was little tourism infrastructure available to offer visitors access to this wildly beautiful island,”
Mr Baillie said.
“Southern Ocean Lodge’s appeal as a remote destination on Kangaroo Island’s far south west coast remains, and in nearly ten years since the lodge opened in March 2008 we are seeing ongoing, strong growth in visitors from both domestic and overseas markets.
“Qantas has recognised the increase in tourism to Kangaroo Island, and it’s great news for all visitors. We’re thrilled that it will soon be even easier for our guests to travel to Southern Ocean Lodge.”
