Winter isn't coming to Queenstown, it's here early

Get the snowboard and skis ready, because Queenstown's winter is officially here, as Kiwis find themselves knee-deep in fresh power.

Get the snowboard and skis ready, because Queenstown’s winter is officially here, as Kiwis find themselves knee-deep in fresh power.

A southerly storm this week gave Queenstown’s Coronet Peak and The Remarkables a very white start to winter season with up to half a metre of snow blanketing both ski areas.

NZSki CEO Paul Anderson said the snow was perfectly timed for Queenstown’s winter preparations.

Describing it as a ‘great start’ to the season, Anderson said groomers are already out on the fields packing down the snow and making more snow to top the natural base.

“This early-season fall will give visitors confidence to book their ski holiday for the coming season.”

He said the snowfall will ensure ideal conditions for guests on scheduled opening days, which was originally scheduled on 13 June 13 for Coronet Peak and 20 June for The Remarkables.

The cold snap is expected to deliver further snow flurries to Queenstown throughout today. The forecast is for continued cold temperatures through until at least Wednesday, providing perfect conditions for snowmaking at Coronet Peak.

Just in time for the early snow fall, Air New Zealand is offering up to $150 off return flights to New Zealand.

The offer is valid for select travel dates in June, July, September, October, December, January and March.
