Amadeus repairs the 'fragmented' way agents connect to hotels

The industry 'had no standards', its back-end systems were outdated, fragmented and unable to deliver the choice or content required for agents to stay ahead of their competition.

The industry ‘had no standards’, its back-end systems were outdated, fragmented and unable to deliver the choice or content required for agents to stay ahead of their competition.

That’s how one in the IT world would have described the state of the hospitality sector – only a few months ago.

But like a brunette in knee-high boots and golden bangles, Amadeus stepped in to utilise its expertise, fix the sector and deliver more benefits to both suppliers and sellers.

Amadeus hopes to save hospitality the way Wonder Woman saved Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

You’ve probably heard of Amadeus Hotels. The system itself isn’t new, but Amadeus has spent the past few years investing in the product to develop an offering that is the equivalent of its advanced aviation platform.

Amadeus IT Group, Director of Hotel Distribution, Peter Waters, explained to media last month that unlike aviation and IATA, hospitality has had no regulatory body. This has resulted in a consolidated industry with a few internet players and an “inefficient market place and a large scale industry problem”.

“The hospitality industry has had no standards.”

“Amadeus feels like we’re one of the few players that can really put the investment in with the knowledge and skills to build a community platform for very large hotel group chains and deploy that into the community.

“We’re setting standards where we can take content directly from chains, from aggregators and online travel agencies and put that together to create a standard set of information where we can say this is the same property, you can book it from this supply chain or this one, here are the comparative rates, here are the comparative margins and the agent can then make a decision.”

In addition to collecting and delivering information to agents, the updated platform has been loaded with wider choice to cater to corporate, leisure or resort searches.

“We’ve invested in expanding the breadth in our content system.”

“We made sure to have enough hotel content in our system, the right hotel content, that would be required by all types of agents.

“We have more resort and beach content for online or leisure agencies and there’s much more graphic content that makes it feel like an Internet product but taking it to the next level.”

Also speaking to media, Tony Carter, Amadeus IT Pacific Managing Director, said hoteliers and suppliers are able to improve their competitive edge bu utilising alternative distribution solutions with a global reach, ultimately reducing booking costs and helping to secure loyalty.

“Amadeus has invested in this platform that can provide both hotels and subscribers, travel agents and TMC’s with a highly efficient, new value proposition.”

“Ultimately, Amadeus Hotels increases choice, generates loyalty and delivers greater revenues for our customers as a result. More business is better business.”
