Where in the world is cheapest for Aussies?

The latest Hotels.com TM Hotel Price Index revealed that despite the Australian dollar reaching a six-year low, hotel prices in Asia remained relatively unchanged last year compared to 2013.

In fact, the online company says Asia’s accommodation prices were only slightly higher than what they were a decade ago.

So which country had the cheapest hotel rates for Aussies in 2014?

Cambodia had the cheapest average accommodation rate for Aussie travellers.

Cambodia had the cheapest average nightly hotel rate last year at $73.

Vietnam was second cheapest at $91.

This was followed by Thailand with $113.

Poland came in fourth last year, with an average nightly room rate of $116.

Ongoing political disruption in Egypt has kept hotel rates at an average of $117 – making it the fifth cheapest destination for Aussie travellers.

Hong Kong was one of the few Asian destinations to experience a jump in hotel prices last year.

The only Asian cities that experienced a modest rise in 2014 were China, Hong Kong and Japan.

Countries where hotel prices fell the most last year included Oman, which saw an 18 percent drop in average hotel rates per night followed by Russia (seven percent), Sri Lanka (five percent) and Croatia (five percent).

Then there’s destinations like Morocco, which experienced a 41 percent hike in average nightly hotel rates.

Mauritius was another spot that got a little more expensive in 2014, with a 25 percent increase in prices followed by Greece with 18 percent and Qatar at 17 percent.

Meanwhile, Australians paid the most for accommodation in New York – an average of $317 per night.

Budget travellers would have been surprised to find the average cost of a night in Rio de Janiero was at $299 last year, while Cancun sat at $282.

Honolulu was another pricy spot, with Aussies spending around $281 per night and Boston was at $272.

In Australia, growing tourism to Tasmania drove up Hobart’s hotel prices by six percent to $176, while Adelaide experienced the same growth to $153 per night.

In the capital, Canberra’s accommodation rates climbed two percent to $185 as did Brisbane’s, which ended up at $172.

Sydney and Darwin shared the same average hotel rate of $200 – although Sydney’s climbed one percent last year as Darwin’s fell $200.
