HOTEL REVIEW: Tintswalo Atlantic, Table Mountain National Park South Africa

Spend a night at Tintswalo Atlantic and you will be enveloped in peace. The only sound you'll hear is that of the waves crashing on the shoreline that fronts your room.

Spend a night at Tintswalo Atlantic and you will be enveloped in peace. The only sound you’ll hear is that of the waves crashing on the shoreline that fronts your room.

The five-star boutique lodge is the only hotel within the Table Mountain National Park in Hout Bay, South Africa. It sits perched on a pebbled beach with panoramic views across Hout Bay harbour, the dramatic Sentinel mountain peak, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Check-in Experience

When you arrive at Tintswalo Atlantic you will learn that the steep, winding track that leads down to the secluded luxury accommodation is no match for your own car. Instead, you will be directed to a small parking area just off the main road before being taken down to the lodge in a private mini-bus.

There was definitely a chill in the air the night we checked in, so it was a welcome relief to be ushered into wide arm-chairs by a crackling fire and given a refreshing cocktail to sip on.

Most people would be utterly blown away by the views on arrival, but as it was dark when we arrived, we had to wait with anticipation until the morning to be greeted with Tintswalo’s famous vista.

The Suite

Each room has a unique design and theme, paying tribute to the beauty of the hotel’s amazing natural surroundings.

I am staying in the Antigua Island room which is decorated in a Carribean shabby-chic style. It’s both luxury and laid back with fresh blues and bright yellows throughout.

The suite is totally private, with large sliding doors opening onto a deck just above the water. A generously-sized swinging chair sits on the deck, a prime place to sit, relax and take in the views.

The bathroom is huge and utterly fabulous. The deep bathtub sits against a large glass window, offering uninterrupted views of the ocean.

If it’s chilly you can also take advantage of the room’s own fireplace and underfloor heating.

The Bed

Sometimes you meet a bed that is perfect in every way. This bed is truly like sleeping on a fluffy cloud. I was sad to part ways with it.

Food & Beverage

The lodge dining room leads out onto an expansive wooden deck with incredible ocean views. Sundowners here are a must.

All meals are created with locally-sourced, sustainable ingredients. Some diners make the journey here for the food alone, even if they’re staying closer to the city.

Everything is made to order. Breakfast begins with an offering of yoghurt, muesli and seasonal fruits. After this, you can build your own egg-based breakfast. The table is also generously filled with jams, preserves, toast and pastries. Fresh tea and coffee are also delivered with a smile.

For dinner, there’s a set menu which changes according to what’s fresh. There are a couple of options for each course. We’re all impressed with how fresh and well cooked out food is.

The Verdict

This place is a luxury, peaceful retreat that feels a world away from the bustle of Cape Town, but in reality, it’s only a 40-minute drive to the heart of the city. I couldn’t imagine a more soothing and stunning environment to watch Cape Town’s famous sunset from.
