Time Magazine named it 2014’s best invention. Barrack Obama uses one. Selfie Sticks are becoming the most popular accessory for tourists from all walks of life.

Here Dean Van Es, CEO of Fast Cover Travel Insurance shares what you need to know about these photographic weapons.

Contrary to how many people you see using them, Selfie Sticks aren’t as easy as they look! A good start is to purchase a decent quality Selfie Stick, with stability mode, Bluetooth activation and handle grip. This will minimise shaking and ensure the perfect photo every time.

Before you dive too far into the Selfie Stick phenomenon, it’s worth noting that many renowned museums have banned the use of Selfie Sticks inside due to worrying reports of patrons and even priceless art works whacked and stabbed by these wands of narcissism.

Similarly, many European football stadiums have banned them after the audience began using them as weapons during heated matches! Always check if you can bring your new technological friend with you to avoid confiscation!

Unfortunately, Selfie Sticks aren’t the most apt technology for the adventure seeker. This is where the trusty, sturdy GoPro comes in more useful. Traditionally produced for extreme sporting, there are other benefits to owning a GoPro.

There are a vast array of accessories including an attachable pole that remarkably resembles a selfie stick. Additionally they are small, durable, come with water proof housing and Bluetooth options. Mount it onto a helmet, a surfboard, and the handle bars on your bike. The photo quality is also vastly better than the standard smart phone.

Finally, make sure to keep safe when posing for the perfect selfie. All too often, I hear of travellers getting too close to the cliff edge and making daring steps over the safety barriers, in their attempt of a perfect selfie. The safety measure is there for a reason!

Here’s a few tourist destinations that will really benefit from a Selfie Stick or GoPro

GoPro

  • Eiffel Tower, Paris. If you make it to the top of the tower, any photo will be a keeper every time. However if heights aren’t for you, a well angled photo from the Avenue Gustave Eiffel is just as beautiful.
  • Top of the Rock, Rockefeller Centre, New York. Hailed one of the most iconic views in the world, a photo capturing the vast skyline of New York will only be better if you could include yourself and loved ones using the mastery of a good Selfie Stick.
  • Big Ben, London. We advise you don’t get too close to Big Ben for the perfect shot. Halfway down Westminster Bridge is where the best view of the clock tower is, and also the best place to snap a selfie.

This week, KarryOn is giving you the chance to win one of 11 3SIXT Selfie Sticks.
