Those inspired by travel, exploration, discovery were in for a treat Sunday night as National Geographic Live’s My Nine Lives with Steve Winter took the stage at the Opera House.

One of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife photographers, Steve Winter shared his intense encounters and astonishing images of the big cats of South Africa, Brazil and Hollywood with Australian audiences on his first tour downunder this winter.

The tour, which started in Melbourne on 31 July and ended in Sydney 16 August, featured Steve’s gripping tales of finding and capturing rare images of these elusive endangered species – which often requires many months in the field, working under dangerous and difficult conditions.

“By saving the world’s top predators, we save huge forests, rivers, wildlife, and ultimately, our planet.”

Steve Winter

Steve’s mission is to share the beauty of big cats whilst reinvigorating efforts to save them.

The photographer discussed capturing the nocturnal adventures of a mountain lion in the Hollywood hills and narrowly avoiding becoming jaguar prey in a Brazilian rainforest to documenting leopards in South Africa’s Sabi Sands.

A Big Cat legend, Steve has won the world’s top photojournalism awards including BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year. His decade-long project documenting the world’s disappearing tigers recently culminated in his stunning National Geographic book Tigers Forever.

National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative is creating a worldwide virtual high five chain in support of big cats as well as raising money to preserve lions, other big cats and their habitats.
