Spend some time in NYC, and you’ll probably notice the city’s lack of public toilets. Yep, as great as the Big Apple is, it really needs to do something about that. I mean, peeing is a basic right, no?
So what you’ll end up having to do is use a restaurant or cafe’s toilet. But then you’re probably going to have to buy something, as ‘toilets are for customers only’ – or so says the sign stuck to the front door. In America, money talks, and if you want to pee, you’ll need to trade your dollars into the bathroom key.
And when it comes to taking money out, NYC makes this incredibly easy for you. There are ATMs everywhere in NYC, on nearly every street, outside nearly every restaurant and cafe, and inside pretty much all convenience stores.
But there’s one particular ATM that’s totally different, totally cool, and totally delicious: a cupcake ATM!
Instead of dispensing greenbacks, this ATM allows you to order freshly baked cupcakes via a touchscreen interface before dispensing these treats for you to immediately stuff into your face! The ATM can hold up to 800 of these bad boys, all in different flavours (try the cinnamon chocolate!), and is replenished daily.
A cupcake will cost you about $4, and is best enjoyed with an authentic flat white in Little Australia.
The first Sprinkles Cupcakes ATM was launched in California back in 2012 after the owner of the Sprinkles Bakery had a craving in the middle of a night. Frustrated that she couldn’t satisfy her sugar craving in the early hours, she came up with the brilliant idea of the cupcake ATM.
Since then, Sprinkles Cupcakes ATMs have popped up all around the United States, including in Atlanta, Chicago and Dallas.
Since making its way to the East Coast, the Sprinkles Cupcakes ATM has been a huge success, so much so that you’ll probably have to wait in line for a while whilst tourists and local New Yorkers order their sugar hits for the day.
But it’s totally worth it, in equal parts for the novelty of it and the fact that they’re simply amazing!

Located in the Upper East Side at 780 Lexington Avenue, the ATM is between 60th and 61st streets, and is conveniently located only a few blocks from Central Park.
The ATM is easily gotten to either by uber or the NYC subway (use 4, 5, 6, N, Q, R subway lines to 59th street station).
