Hotels that stand out, without being a ‘splurge’

We all love a great hotel but can’t always afford to spend a fortune for a few nights stay. For many young travellers, it’s a catch-22; they have graduated past the cheap and cheerful hostel and are willing to hand over their hard-earned cash for a bit more luxury, but don’t want an overpriced, cookie-cutter experience.

That’s the gap many hotels are trying to fill. And its ones like the Hoxton Shoreditch in trendy East London who are doing it right.

It’s all about location

Once home to crowded slums and the railroads and docks that bore the brunt of the Blitz during World War II, the East End has recently emerged as a cultural and even, technological centre.

Its industrial buildings are now coveted residential and office space and the streets are lined with boutiques, markets, bars, eateries and street food including the famous Brick Lane where you can sample delicious curries.

The Hoxton Shoreditch is a few minutes’ walk from Old Street Station on the Northern Line. Despite it’s unassuming exterior, on any given workday you’ll find dozens of people escaping their expensive warehouse offices and soaking up the atmosphere (and free Wi-Fi) in the Hoxton lobby. In the evening, the after-work crowd kicks off the night with a few cocktails or a bite at the American-style Grill.

Anyone who’s ever travelled solo or wandered from his or her room to find a quiet, boring café or bar knows how great it is when their hotel is the place to be. And the Hoxton is that. It makes it that much easier to meet new people, figure out the best neighbourhood spots and make the most of your stay.

Not just a place to rest your head

While the common areas are cool places to hang, the rooms are where the Hoxton step up the luxury. There’s a smart, mature feeling, with sturdy armchairs and bookshelf, but also lighthearted touches and a colourful mix of textures.

If you want to go for something even more unique, request one of the eight different ‘concept rooms’ at check-in. If they have one available, you’ll be treated to a one-of-a-kind design at no extra charge. Definitely a great way to step up your Instagram game!

London is expensive and the Hoxton isn’t the cheapest option around, but there are a few extras that make it a better bargain, especially for those who want a bit more from their stay. First, free brekkie! Each day, a complimentary bag of yoghurt and granola, orange juice and fruit is delivered to your room, at a time you choose. The room is also stocked with fresh milk, water tea and coffee.

In addition to free Wi-Fi, your stay also includes an hour of international calls, so you can check in with family and friends back home. Plus, noon checkout give you a bit more time to curl up with your pillow if you’ve overdone the sightseeing (or nightlife).

It’s not always easy to balance originality, location and price, but the Hoxton Shoreditch seems to have it right.

If you’ve had enough of ‘backpacker’ accommodations but not the community vibe, the ‘Hox’ is for you!
