What you can do with $0 around the world

In a world of $70,000 a night hotel rooms and three-course meals that cost more than a small car, it's comforting to know that there are still some things out there in the world that are FREE.

In a world of $70,000 a night hotel rooms and three-course meals that cost more than a small car, it’s comforting to know that there are still some things out there in the world that are FREE.

Because lets face it – everyone loves free $hit; probably even Mr. Trump (could you imagine if Donald was one of your clients? – we did, and it wasn’t pretty…)

Previously on KarryOn, we looked at what $20 buys you around the world. But today we’re getting our tight-@ss hat on and looking at what you can do with nothing, nada – eff all – to you name.

Here are seven things you can do in different parts of the world that won’t cost you a single cent.

1. Visit the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC

You wouldn’t expect the world’s largest museum and research centre containing over 138 million artefacts, works of art, and specimens to be totally free, but it is.

The Smithsonian Institution charges nothing to enter into any of its 19 museums and galleries and the National Zoo.

2. Take a squiz inside St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican

You can visit the home of the pope at the St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, and you don’t even have to bring a box of chocolates – it costs nothing to enter the holiest of holies.

However, you will have to make a booking in advance and wait, and wait, and wait some more.

3. Explore the Getty Center

The $1.3 billion Getty Centre houses an impressive selection of paintings, sculptures, and drawings pre-dating the 20th century from the billionaire J. Paul Getty’s private collection.

Entrance is free here, as are the sweeping views across Los Angeles.

4. Check out the Museo del Prado in Madrid

madird

Housing works from Picasso, Rembrandt, and Francisco Goya, the Museo del Prado is one of Spain’s most cherished museums, and it’s totally free every day from 6pm to 8pm Monday to Saturday, and 5pm to 7pm on Sunday and public holidays.

5. Go kayaking in the Hudson River in New York City

kayak

Between May and October, the Downtown Boathouse offers free sit-on-top kayaks for everybody to use in protected sections of the Hudson River.

Everything is provided, and all you’ll need to do is know how to swim and put on a life jacket.

6. Join a free city tour in Singapore

singp

If you’re stopping in Singapore en route to Europe or elsewhere in the world and your transit is longer than 5.5 hours, then you’ll be happy to know that you can while away some of that waiting time by hopping onboard one of two free Singapore city tours.

The free tours run for about 2.5 hours and take you to some of the most popular spots in town – such as vibrant Chinatown and Merlion Park.

7. Trip out at Parc Guell in Barcelona

Antoni Gaudi’s eclectic legacy lives on in Barcelona, and you don’t have to pay a single Euro to appreciate the man’s genius, such as at Parc Guell.

Parts of this park cost nothing to enter, although you will need a ticket (7 € when booked online) to enter the Monumental Zone.
