Why U by Uniworld is a total game changer for millennials who love to travel

Wow! It’s been an incredible four days sailing on the Seine in France with U by Uniworld on their first ever cruise for millennials and having the sleek and sexy ship “The B” as my floating boutique hotel.

In case you didn’t read this articleKarryOn was invited as the only Australian trade media to experience the inaugural launch of a new cruise line, U by Uniworld, on its first sailing in France.

Their mission was to make river cruising cool enough for the millennial crowd, and they’ve totally nailed it. U by Uniworld is a fresh approach to cruising for 21 – 45 year olds, filling a much-needed gap in the market.

I was a little nervous in the days leading up to the inaugural cruise as I’d never been on a river cruise before and I wasn’t sure if I’d like it. But by the end of the trip, I didn’t want to leave.

This is a revolution guys, a total game changer. I’m predicting that U by Uniworld is going to make HUGE waves in the travel landscape when the innovative product is launched in April 2018. For the first time in history, millennials will be able to experience the cooler side of river cruising in Europe, changing the public’s perception of river cruising as only for those in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

My verdict in short: Sensational. Seriously, it totally wowed me.

Now let me tell you how I reached this conclusion…

THE SHIP

The B, the sleek and sexy ship I sailed on, had everything I or any other millennial would need for an amazing time in Europe. The ship sports a black exterior and can accommodate at maximum capacity 120 guests in three room categories — Studio, Balcony and Suites — all with river views.

Onboard there are two bars (including one on the top deck), a classy restaurant and dining room staffed by talented chefs and friendly wait staff; a coffee bar where you can caffeinate at any time of the day; a rooftop deck for fresh air and sun; and even a laundry that’s free for guests to use – how convenient is that?! No more scouting the city in your free time for a place to do your laundry guys.

I loved that there were electrical sockets all around the ship too, meaning that you could charge your phone or laptop or camera literally anywhere – on the deck, in the bar, in the restaurant.

The B is one of two ships in the U by Uniworld fleet, and was recently renovated and fitted with everything that’s important to a millennial. The ship was recently renamed too, and I was lucky enough to witness the renaming ceremony and have a glass of bubbly to celebrate!

THE ROOM

My room during the inaugural cruise was exactly what you’d expect to find in a cool boutique hotel.

The furniture was chic, the bed and pillows were uber comfy, the flat screen TV came hooked up with tons of movies and TV shows, and the attached bathroom and shower were modern and spacious. Shampoo and body gel are provided inside, too, and there’s a hairdryer under the sink.

The climate could be controlled too, and entrance to the room was made via a keycard.

THE ACTIVITIES

Everyday on The B, passengers could sign up for a range of cool adventures and excursions, such as going on a treasure hunt in the Louvre…

… following in the footsteps of the French Impressionist Claude Monet in Rouen …

… joining a wine and painting class …

… going on a secret tour of Versailles …

… going for a casual paddle in Normandy …

… and many more. Search for #TravelForU for more guest experiences. There were also daily yoga classes, wine and painting classes, silent discos, pyjama parties, etc., etc.

But unlike other cruises, you’re not locked into anything with this new product. Passengers can join the fun excursions or they can simply do their own thing and wander around the city or town they’ve docked into, or just chill out on the ship, watching a movie, getting a massage, or sipping on a cocktail.

The main message the brand wants to put out is that its all about U.

WHAT I LOVED

A post shared by sleasca (@sleasca) on

As anyone who has ever taken a cruise before knows, two of the main advantages of cruising are only having to unpack/pack once, and sailing along route whilst you’re blissfully dreaming in your comfy bed. Both of these will save you precious holiday time, meaning you’ll be able to spend your time out there wandering through a medieval city scouting for the best coffee spot or cycling along the banks of the river and seeking the best spot to for a glass of wine and cheese.

I also loved the fun and youthful vibe onboard. The staff were simply amazing at creating such a cool atmosphere.

The portable wifi devices that you could take outside the ship when on excursions was also another one of those details that made the whole experience a hundred times better. I could talk with my friends and family back home whilst strolling around the streets of Paris.

I think the choice of Uniworld to choose Petra Nemcova, a model and noted philanthropist who established her own non-for-profit organisation the Happy Hearts Fund, as their Guardian Angel speaks volumes about their own ethical and indeed admirable approach to travel. This isn’t a company concerned solely with the bottom line, but one that’s committed to encouraging sustainable practices and making the world a better place through travel, which we are totally committed to at KarryOn as well.
