Revealed: Tripadvisor's Top 2024 Destinations, incl. top trending, food & honeymoon spots

Asia has dominated Tripadvisor’s 'Top Destinations' lists for 2024, talking out the top spots in five of seven categories including top trending destination and top overall destination.

Asia has dominated Tripadvisor’s ‘Top Destinations’ lists for 2024, talking out the top spots in five of seven categories including top trending destination and top overall destination.

The top destinations, which form part of the 2024 Travelers’ Choice Awards, are determined by reviews given by travellers from around the world on Tripadvisor between 1 October 2022 and 30 September 2023. They consider the quality and quantity of reviews for accommodation, restaurants and things to do in each destination.

According to Tripadvisor data, travel is set to see sustained momentum in 2024. Based on Tripadvisor’s Consumer Sentiment Survey of over 2,400 consumers from across six markets including Australia, almost half (45 per cent) of travellers are planning three or more trips in 2024, with nearly half (46 per cent) looking to take at least one international trip.

Where’s ‘trending’?

The top trending destinations are the places that have experienced the biggest increase in popularity from one year to the next.

Topping this list is Tokyo (Japan), which has seen remarkable growth from Australia, as well as many other source markets.

The next most trending destination is Seoul (South Korea), which was just linked to Australia’s biggest city for the first time, followed by Halong Bay (Vietnam), which is becoming even easier to reach from Australia, Palawan (Philippines) and Sapa (Vietnam).

Rounding out the top 10 trending destinations for 2024 are Bogota (Colombia), Pattaya (Thailand), Alajuela (Costa Rica), Phnom Penh (Cambodia) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Topping the Travelers’ Choice Award for Top Destination is Dubai, which secured the number one spot for an unprecedented third straight year.

Upon news of the award, Visit Dubai CEO Issam Kazim said travellers have “embraced Dubai’s diverse offerings for all segments, from families and thrill seekers to business visitors and cultural explorers, recognising the unique experiences that can only be found in the city”.

Following Dubai as the top destinations are Bali (Indonesia), London (UK), Hanoi (Vietnam) and Rome (Italy). Paris (France), Cancun (Mexico), Marrakech (Morocco), Crete (Greece) and Hoi An (Vietnam) round out the top 10 list.

Topping the highly competitive Travelers’ Choice Award for top culture destination is Cuba, which climbed five places from 2023, followed by Cusco (Peru) and Agra (India), the gateways to Machu Picchu and the Taj Mahal respectively.
