How do you get labeled as a hipster city?

It seems like you need a prevalence of free spirits, aspiring musicians, vintage shopping and street art. Y

You’ll know you’ve stepped into a hipster city when people are taking photos with old leica cameras or polaroids whilst the latest in smart phone technology lives in their pockets, the graffiti stops being just profanity and turns into ‘a comment on our slavery to the media’ or a comment on anything really.

Hipsters are just so damn deep.

Don’t think we’re immune to the hipster craze. A few of you may remember the “Australia’s biggest wanker’ phenomenon a couple of years ago.

Because the first rule of being a hipster: deny that you are one.

Without further ado, let’s explore the top hipster neighbourhoods from around the world, they’re so not mainstream.

6. Shoreditch, London

They’ve got the customary street art, a famous market and the vintage shops that make a city quintessentially hipster.

Shoreditch was hipster before hipster even existed.

Which makes it the ultimate hipster city on our list, other London burroughs like Dalston and Peckham are being hailed as the new Shoreditch, but we still feel the original is better.

Check out Brick Lane for some Indian sweets or some bagel sandwiches from Beigel Bake.

5. Williamsburg, New York

Often dubbed ‘Hipster Mecca’ of America, Williamsburg has been attracting.

Unfortunately, the neighbourhood is attracting so many free spirits that rent is starting to sky rocket, soon the hipsters won’t be able to afford to live there.

A world of bow ties, trilby hats, and suede chukka boots, where everyone’s an amateur photographer with an unnecessarily expensive DSLR camera.

4. Amsterdam-Noord

Amsterdam-Noord which once housed industrial warehouses has now been overrun by the vintage clad subculture who use the warehouses for pop up restaurants, art galleries, skate parks and even music festivals.

Although a new wave of gentrification has started taken over this haven for our bearded hipster friends.

3. Kreuzberg, Berlin

kreuzberg

Berlin used to be Euro hipster central at a time but with gentrification sweeping the city it’s been semi subdued into little pockets like Kreuzberg.

Being alternative is key in Kreuzberg, admire that graffiti like it was painted by Monet, or swim (ironically of course) in a large floating swimming pool floating on the River Spree.

This section of Berlin’s deeply entrenched in punk rock history, Iggy Pop even lived here.

2. Malasaña, Madrid

Many consider it the birthplace of Spanish nightlife. Now fixie bikes, beards, and some of the deepest V’s in the game can be found in abundance.

Obscure Cafes and obscure book shops line the renovated streets, and a bountiful amount of vintage stores that would make Macklemore proud. P.S. Hipsters are called “modernos” in Spanish.

1. Fitzroy, Melbourne

Fitzroy 1

Of course we can’t forget our very own home grown (there’s no other way for hipsters) hipster neighbourhood, Fitzroy.

Our hipster pride and joy of course has independent boutiques, huge art scene and even an arts & crafts market.

One thing it’s got going for it for the non hipster folks is the plethora of cafes on Brunswick Street.

The Rose Street Artists Market specializes in art and design, magnetizing creatives from all over the world to its rows and rows of handmade art, jewellery, photographs, homebaked goods, fashion and accessories.
