UPDATE 5.07 pm: Police say the clearance at the Opera House and its surrounding areas today was just a “precautionary measure”, but haven’t elaborated on why the precaution was taken.
The Opera House’s Restaurant continues to take bookings for today, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. The receptionist at the venue told the publication that it’s “business as usual”.
PUBLISHED 3.00 pm: Tourists have been evacuated from the Opera House and ferries have been cancelled to Circular Quay as police carry out a search of the area.
Authorities have confirmed the operation is taking place, however, have refused to elaborate on the reason behind the search.
According to reports and Twitter updates from locals, the Opera House has been completely evacuated and tourists have been cleared from the area. A metal fence has been placed around the popular tourist site with police and security guards manning it.

The Sydney Opera House has yet to confirm whether shows will be cancelled.
A boat has also been spotted circling around the iconic building.
Ferries heading to Circular Quay were stopped and told to turn back around in the direction they came.

A search is also believed to be underway at Manly Wharf.
