Most people only think of Waikiki Beach, Pearl Harbour and piña coladas when they think of Hawaii.

But come on, you know there’s just so much more to do all throughout the Hawaiian archipelago than that, including activities and hotels that fall under the “slightly different” category.

Here are some of our recommendations on where to stay and what to do in Hawaii that are just a bit different to your standard suggestions.

Qantas operate five services per week departing Sydney to Honolulu, from where passengers can take domestic flights to other islands in the archipelago.

Anyway, without further ado, here’s to a different slice of Hawaii.

Stay at the Lumeria Maui Yoga Hotel

No ordinary hotel, the Lumeria Maui Yoga Hotel combines the kinds of creature comforts you’d expect in a world-class resort with a range of wellness activities such as yoga, meditation, aromatherapy to help guests truly unwind and get in touch with their inner selves.

Primarily an education centre, the Lumeria Maui Yoga Hotel is the perfect place to learn yoga and other spiritual disciplines, as well as more adventurous activities, such as surfing, paddle boarding and rock climbing. With exquisite dining options and a world-class spa, you may never want to leave.

Go on a guided lava hike

Get up close and personal with Mother Nature’s fiery side by enlisting yourself on a guided lava hike on Hawaii’s Big Island, and watch as a river of red-hot lava gently flows over black volcanic rock before descending into the cool ocean.

Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Hawaii has an incredible amount of volcanic activity (there are currently three active volcanoes in the state), and you simply can’t leave the archipelago without experiencing this first-hand.

Go to a Mauna Kea star party

Imagine sipping hot chocolate on the summit of the highest mountain in Hawaii (Maunakea, 4205 metres) as thousands of stars dance and twinkle in the heavens above you? True, it’s not exactly what Hawaii is best known for, but there are few other places in the world that provide the kind of world-class conditions for star gazing as found in Hawaii.

There’s no light radiation out here, and hardly no cloud cover to obstruct the view. So do yourself a favour and book yourself in for a night with the starsand learn all about the night sky – from Polaris to the Southern Cross. Trust us: you’ve never quite seen the night sky until you’ve seen it from atop Maunakea.

Get a spiritual gemstone reading

Try something a little different in Hawaii by getting a spiritual gemstone reading, and come back home with a greater sense of who you are and what you can do overcome your challenges. Believe it or not, but Hawaii has a rich heritage of spiritual healing that often draws upon precious gemstones indigenous to the islands.

In a typical consultation with a crystalologist you’ll learn which stones resonate with you, and what stones you should wear to achieve more peace in your life. You can also learn how you can use the natural healing energies of the Hawaiian lands for your spiritual well-being, including tips on ocean cleansing.

Swim with white sharks

Come face-to-face with the predators of the sea in Hawaii and spend a little time swimming with wild sharks – if you dare! An experience unlike no other, you’ll be motored out to crystal clear international waters right smack bang inside shark territory where you’ll see just how brave you really are.

Of course, you’ll be protected by a cage and under the supervision of experts, but still, this isn’t an adventure for the faint hearted. Are you up for the challenge?

So, what are you waiting for?
