Did you know that one tourist travelling to Ecuador helps feed seven families for 15 days?
We didn’t, but according to Chimu Adventures, this figure emphasises the importance of tourism to the destination and the livelihood of its citizens.
That’s why despite the recent 7.8-magnitude earthquake, Chimu is urging the industry to look beyond the heartbreaking images and instead promote the destination to clients for travel in 2016.
“We are deeply saddened to hear about the recent events in Ecuador.”

“As a country, this will have a huge impact on Ecuador – a place very close to our hearts.
“We must now look to how we can help Ecuador rebuild and overcome the serious issues that follow in the wake of an earthquake.”
The South and Central America tour operator continued, saying that by sharing images of the destination’s beauty, the industry can help build a sustainable economy.
“Share the beauty of Ecuador as a country, of its warm people who want tourism to grow, to share our heritage, hospitality and earn an honest income.”
In addition to sending travellers to the destination, Chimu Adventures has also set up an Ecuador Earthquake Appeal to raise funds that will be sent to the Ecuador Red Cross.

According to the latest count, the weekend earthquake in Ecuador killed some 480 people, 231 are still missing and thousands have been injured and left homeless.
So far, Chimu, G Adventures and Contour Travels have confirmed that none of their tours were affected by the quake and they will continue ahead with upcoming itineraries. Main tourists destinations such as Quito and the Galapagos experienced no damage during the quake.
For people with trips booked in Ecuador over the coming weeks, Southern Cross Travel Insurance CEO, Craig Morrison, suggests contacting airlines and accommodation providers and find out whether there are any potential disruptions.
Currently, all flights to Ecuador’s international airport are operating as normal and LAN has confirmed no disruptions to its services.
“If any part of your trip is cancelled or delayed due to the earthquake, your service providers may be able to provide refunds, credit notes or alter your bookings without charging additional fees.”

He continued, saying the next step would be to contact your travel insurance provider for any potential reimbursements.
“We advise travellers who have been impacted by the earthquake to keep all your cancellation notifications from your airline, including emails, along with receipts for your expenses, including accommodation and meals to help with your claim submission,” he added.
