Tomorrow is World Gin Day which happens to collide with her Majesty’s birthday (13 June) and at KarryOn we say ‘Happy Birthday’ to the Queen with her favourite drink – the gin based Dubbonet!
It’s not just the Queen who favours gin, if you love a frosty gin based cocktail too, you’re not alone.
According to a research conducted by Roy Morgan last year, gin overtakes tequila as the second most popular white spirit among those 25-34, and is almost as popular as vodka among those 35-49. By 50 and over, gin has become the clear leader.
So what kind of gin should you drink?
Adam, Head of Spirits, Non-Liquor and Cider for Dan Murphy’s has rounded up his favourite UK and Aussie gins.
While gin has long been affiliated with the UK, London specifically, Aussie gins have surged in recent years bringing a modern twist to an age old classic.
The British popularised gin, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that they still make some of the best cocktails of it.
If you want something traditional – merry old Britain is just where you should be looking.
TRY: Bombay Sapphire London, The London No. 1 Gin or Tanqueray.
However you can find great gins on home soil and although boutique Australian gin is only a recent innovation it’s already proven to be an award show darling.
Each distiller is a deft hand at capturing the essence of Australia with the gins fused with a variety of native/indigenous botanicals that breath fresh life into the spirits category offering a unique flavour.
If your new to drinking gin or seeking greater variety Aussie gin could be for you!
TRY: Four Pillars Gin, The Melbourne Gin Company and The West Winds Gin.
