Aussie interest in Japan doubles in 2017 and its on for young and old

The sun seems to be rising on Japan’s tourism industry, with local operators experiencing high traveller demand for the destination in 2017 compared to prior years.

Perhaps it was the country’s debut on MasterChef Australia, the cheap airfares, new air links or maybe it was the realisation that Japan isn’t as expensive as one tends to expect, either way Aussies are bewitched by the destination, according to Wendy Wu Tours.

The tour operator says the Land of the Rising Sun is having its ‘shunkan’ (moment in Japanese) in the Australian market this year, with bookings increasing by 55 percent compared to last year.

Managing Director for Australia & New Zealand, Andrew Mulholland, said interest in Japan has doubled year-on-year as more Aussies rediscover the country’s history and fresh food.

“As the world wakes up to the wonders of Japan, I’d encourage you to visit in 2018 before the rest of the world does.”

Japanese hotspots for 2017 include Kyoto, Koyasan, Osaka, Hiroshima and Koyasan, while experiencing the great outdoors is a high priority among Aussie visitors, particularly during Cherry Blossom season.

With that in mind, it’s no wonder Wendy Wu Tours’ 14-day Discovery Japan itinerary is the most popular in the operator’s portfolio, as it ticks off a number of highly desired spots and favoured Japanese experiences.

The trip gives Australians up to three days in four prefectures – Tokyo, Takayama, Kyoto and Osaka. Highlights include visiting the Tsukiji market in Fukagawa, strolling around the Hamarikyu Gardens, buying fresh ingredients at Miyagama market, taking part in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony in Kyoto and wandering through Osaka’s Castle.
