HOBART to PERTH: Virgin Australia's new domestic route takes off

Travel between Western Australia and Tasmania became a whole lot easier this week when Virgin Australia launched the only direct service between Perth and Hobart.

Travel between Western Australia and Tasmania became a whole lot easier this week when Virgin Australia launched the only direct service between Perth and Hobart.

Two months after announcing the new route, Virgin Australia went ahead and sent its Boeing 737 to fly between the two cities three times weekly.

Although still new to the skies, Virgin Australia’s Group Executive Rob Sharp said that the response from both markets was so strong that it “exceeded expectations”.

The new route was so popular pre-take off that Virgin Australia made an early decision to add up to seven extra weekly flights on the route during the Christmas and New Year holiday period (17 December 2018-6 January 2019).

“This gives guests the opportunity to travel a more direct and affordable way between these two cities.”

In an online statement, Perth Airport’s Chief Corporate Service Officer welcomed the new service, saying that it creates an opportunity to connect two capital cities and will save travellers around an hour of travel time.

“It’s great news for Western Australians wanting to discover Tasmania; it’s also great news for Tasmanians wanting to come to WA.”

Debra Blaskett, Perth Airport Chief Corporate Service Officer
