A tour brand has created the travel industry’s first ‘zero waste adventure’ that doesn’t just help travellers minimise their environmental impact while on holiday, but completely eradicate it.
The ‘zero waste’ itinerary created by Natural Habitat Adventure is precisely as it sounds – a holiday during which all waste produce used throughout the trip can either be recycled, composted or reused.
Running for six days from 6 July 2019, the Safari America: Yellowstone Country takes 14 travellers through one of America’s most scenic areas with the aim of proving travel doesn’t need to result in waste materials being sent to the landfill or incinerator.
How will Natural Habitat Adventure keep guests honest?
Trip leaders will encourage travellers to refuse potential waste, such as declining disposable straws or individually packaged condiments. Additionally, each guest will be provided with a zero-waste toolkit, including personal reusable items such as water bottles, mugs, cutlery and tote bags.
Travellers will also receive digital versions of all pre-trip materials, cutting back on paper wastage, while packed meals will be provided in reusable containers.
Natural Habitat Adventures admitted that the zero-waste goal won’t be easy, but is committed to setting this new standard for the industry and proving that travel can be operated with zero-waste.

“One way we’re dedicated to protecting the planet is to inspire the travel industry to become more sustainable.”
Ben Bressler, Natural Habitat Adventures Founder & President
“Our goal is to continually raise the bar on conservation, and our first zero waste adventure will show that it’s possible to reduce our environmental impact while providing an exceptional experience for our guests.”
Natural Habitat Adventures’ conservation travel partner, World Wildlife Fund, urged the travel industry to follow in these environmentally-friendly footsteps by educating “travellers about how they can do their part”.
This ground-breaking project is the latest endeavour to further Nat Hab’s legacy of leadership in ecotourism. In 2007, it became the world’s first carbon-neutral travel company. Nat Hab’s carbon offset program has offset more than 34.5 million pounds of CO2 emissions generated on its global nature adventures.
