If you are looking for something unique to do in India, here is some food for thought: why not get your hands on some real human brains at the country’s only Brain Museum in Bangalore.
This place isn’t for the squeamish, with its display of 400 human brains in transparent plastic jars which have been collected over the past 35 years.
Some of the brains have been affected by various head injuries, cerebrovascular diseases, brain infections, neurodegenerative disorders and brain tumours.
There are also the brains of a few species of animals as well.
This isn’t the kind of museum where you will inspect the brains from afar. No this is a touch and feel kind of place.
Simply ask the staff to get your hands on a REAL human brain.
Some of the highlights of the collection are a brain with worms in it (EEK), brains affected by Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, smoker’s lungs, and electro-micrographs showing the complexity of the nervous system.
The museum forms a part of India’s famous National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences.
The man behind the museum, Dr S. K Shankar said initially, the brains were to be used only to teach the students of neuropathology.
But later he decided he wanted to share the knowledge, to let people come in and see for themselves how the brain looks and how the mind works.
The museum’s website says a visit here is a once in a lifetime experience. We don’t doubt it!
