Convincing an Australian to experience the wonders and adventures in their backyard can be a difficult task when cheap airfares are enticing them to holiday halfway across the world.

That’s one of the challenges Travel Agents face when selling domestic holidays, according to Inspiring Journeys and AAT Kings’ Managing Director, who says air deals along with a lack of local knowledge is keeping Aussies from experiencing at-home treasures.

In an exclusive Q&A with KARRYON, Hans Belle said Australians aren’t entirely aware of the types of adventures they can experience in their own backyard, despite the vast range available to them.

“Australia has a range of experiences that are unique and off the beaten track, including swimming  Gunlom Falls, experiencing eco-glamping on Rottnest Island and discovering the magic of an Uluru and Kata Tjuta sunrise.”

Hans said consultants hoping to book Northern Territory escapes should highlight its active components, which “require a small degree of fitness”.

 

2. SHOWCASE THE COST BENEFITS

‘Australia’s too expensive’ – that’s the impression most Aussies have of holidaying at home, but Hans says a packaged domestic trip could help clients save.

“A packaged domestic trip includes the hotel, meals, petrol, car hire, baggage fees, the safety of not driving and experiences,” he said.

 

3. FOCUS ON THE BEAUTY

Travel doesn’t get more beautiful than Australia’s outback, which is why Hans recommends consultants focus on the “unique beauty/experience domestic trips can offer”.

“For those clients who are unable to take more than a week off work, domestic journeys are the perfect staycation,” he said. “Avoiding those long-haul flights, with journeys from five–22 days.”
