The award-winning Brisbane International Airport (BNE) set a new post-pandemic passenger record with almost 10,500 people passing through the terminal yesterday as sun-seeking travellers look to escape the Aussie winter for warm weather overseas.
Sunday’s international traveller numbers topped the previous post-pandemic count of 10,000 passengers at BNE in late June, a sure sign of an upward trend that international travel is back on the radar.
Brisbane Airport Corporation spokesperson Stephen Beckett said up to 30,000 people passed through the international terminal between Friday 8 July and Sunday 10 July 2022.
“It looks like Aussies are dusting off their passports with many jetting off for a European summer or to Bali and Fiji,” he said.
“In good news for Queensland’s tourism recovery, we are also welcoming a growing number of international visitors to the state with the numbers split about 50/50 between arriving and departing passengers.
“More than 75 per cent of Queensland’s international visitors come through Brisbane Airport, so the busier we are, the better it is for the state’s tourism and hospitality businesses who’ve done it so tough for the last 2.5 years.”
In domestic travel, holidaymakers are escaping the cold snap with Tropical North Queensland destinations such as Cairns, Townsville, Proserpine and the Whitsundays particularly popular right now.
“This week is going to be especially busy at Brisbane’s Domestic Terminal as Queenslanders return home from school holidays and interstate visitors commence their holiday periods,” Mr Beckett said.
