Melbourne Airport reached a new post-pandemic milestone in July 2023 with more than 2.9 million international and domestic travellers passing through the terminals, representing 90 per cent of July 2019 figures.
Of these, MEL processed more than two million domestic passengers (90% of 2019 levels) while international traveller numbers surpassed 900,000 (92% of pre-pandemic pax).
These international pax numbers are 58 per cent up on July 2022 with domestic passengers up four per cent YOY.
Arrivals (55%) made up the majority of international travellers last month, reflecting the end of winter school holidays and the return of overseas students.
The top countries for arrivals into Melbourne were China, New Zealand, India, the UK and Vietnam in July 2023.
Singapore Airlines announced it will again up capacity to Melbourne in 2024 and VietJet recently launched direct services to MEL.
Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said there was potential for improved international access to Melbourne.
“Liberalising the Bilateral Air Service Agreements process would significantly improve Australia’s connectivity with the world,” she said.
“This would improve outcomes for passengers by encouraging international airlines to compete to provide the best price, service and improved reliability.”
To help cater for future passenger growth, MEL has submitted plans for a parallel north-south runway. It’s hoped the runway will open in 2030, subject to government approval.
Melbourne Airport also recently opened a new direct Tullamarine Freeway link to Terminal 4.
