Join Skal International Sydney to celebrate Chinese New Year at the Fortune Village Chinese Restaurant on 14th February. Chinese New Year is traditionally a time to worship ancestors, exorcise evil spirits and pray for a good harvest. As enjoy a Chinese banquet, we will celebrate removing the old, and welcoming the new we will learn more about the Lunar New Year and the Chinese zodiac. There will be plenty of fun and games, including a game of great skill with a prize for the winner!
And don’t forget to buy a ticket in the raffle – our prize this month is a voucher for a 1 night stay at the Mercure Sydney in a King room including breakfast for two.
Slip on your lucky red and gold attire for strength & prosperity and wealth & good fortune, but remember these important dressing taboos for Chinese New Year:
- Do not wear damaged clothes, as they may bring bad luck. These garments may include distressed jeans or clothes with tears.
- Do not wear black, as it is associated with death and mourning. The Chinese consider this colour unlucky during the Lunar New Year celebrations.
- Do not wear new shoes. As funny as it may seem, the Cantonese word for shoe sounds the same as a sigh. So, the Chinese believe that wearing new shoes during the new year celebrations will bring disappointment or sad events that may cause you to sigh all year long.
Your ticket price includes a two-course Chinese banquet and a welcome drink on arrival. Additional drinks may be purchased from the bar.
So, with those handy wardrobe tips to help you start your new year on a good note, we hope you can join us for this celebratory luncheon!
