When should Aussies head back to New Caledonia? DFAT and tourism board give travel updates

Three months after civil unrest broke out in New Caledonia, the country is still essentially closed to tourism. But how is the island nation, particularly Noumea, where most of the uprising occurred, progressing as it looks to return to some sort of normalcy? And when can tourists hope to return to Australia’s closest Pacific neighbour?

Three months after civil unrest broke out in New Caledonia, the country is still essentially closed to tourism. But how is the island nation, particularly Noumea, where most of the uprising occurred, progressing as it looks to return to some sort of normalcy? And when can tourists hope to return to Australia’s closest Pacific neighbour?

In a message to its travel industry partners, New Caledonia Tourism (NCT) said the country remains a “vibrant and welcoming destination” despite recent challenges.

It also maintains that “travellers have never been singled out and the main tourist areas have not been directly affected by the incidents”.

“Our destination, rich in history, with stunning nature and vast lagoon, continues to offer a unique and memorable experience,” it stated. For future visitors, of course.

While the city’s curfew has been reduced from 10pm to 5am, there is still a ban on the retail sale of alcohol (except at bottle shops) “to help maintain order”, NCT said in its trade update.

“Rare localised disturbances” may also still occur in some areas, but the traffic situation is “strongly improving with the removal of most roadblocks”.

Most importantly, the roadblock between Nouméa and La Tontouta International Airport is now clear and “airlines and ferry services are steadily restoring their domestic and international routes”.

Aided by the return oftransport, shops and services, tourism operators continue to adapt to the situation as they prepare for the return of visitors.

According to NCT, businesses are adapting to challenging conditions in various ways. Some are seeking government assistance, while others are changing their services, improving security, temporarily closing or in worst-case scenarios, shutting down permanently.

When tourism does return, the country will rely on the support of travel industry partners.

“We are actively working with local and international stakeholders to prepare the upcoming #EternalNewCal relaunch campaigns, aiming to attract travellers and cruise passengers again by the end of the year,” NCT stated.

“To ensure visitors have the best possible experience, we recommend postponing any trips over the next two months. However, bookings for later dates should be maintained.”

In an update today (9 August), the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said it continues to advise Australians to “reconsider your need to travel to New Caledonia due to ongoing civil unrest and travel disruptions”.

“Political tensions and unrest may increase at short notice. There’s an increased police and security presence,” it notes.

“Security incidents, including arson and carjacking continue across the country.”

On its Smartraveller website, DFAT also recommends Aussies “avoid demonstrations and public gatherings”.

“You’ll need to assess your situation before travelling. Monitor the media and follow the advice of local authorities,” it adds.

Aircalin is currently operating a reduced schedule to Australia.

New Caledonia’s national airline, Aircalin is operating a limited number of flights each week, but “schedules can change at short notice”, the government warns.

Until 26 October 2024, the carrier will fly to Sydney twice a week and Brisbane once a week, with a second flight during school holidays.
