Say sayonara to seasonal: ANA makes Perth-Tokyo a permanent fixture

All Nippon Airways (ANA) is set to enhance connectivity between Western Australia and Japan by transitioning its Perth-to-Tokyo (Narita) flights from a seasonal to a year-round service, commencing 31 March 2025. This strategic move aims to cater to the growing demand for direct travel options between the two regions.

ANA’s return to Perth was initially planned as a seasonal service. However, due to strong demand, the airline resumed flights two weeks earlier than scheduled in October 2024, paving the way for the transition to a year-round operation.

Perth Airport’s Acting CEO, Kate Holsgrove, expressed optimism about the service’s future.

“Once the service re-launches, we will continue to work closely with ANA to rebuild confidently towards a daily service with strong passenger demand all year-round,” she said.

Flight schedules and aircraft details

The service will operate thrice weekly on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

The now permanent Tokyo to Perth flights will be serviced by ANA's B787 Dreamliner.

The northern summer schedule (31 March 2025 – 25 October 2025) features flight NH882 departing Perth at 21:45, arriving in Tokyo (Narita) at 08:25 the following day. The return flight, NH881, leaves Tokyo at 11:10, landing in Perth at 20:15.

During the northern winter schedule (27 October 2025 onward), departure and arrival times adjust slightly: NH882 departs Perth at 21:55, arriving in Tokyo at 08:30, with NH881 leaving Tokyo at 11:20 and arriving in Perth at 20:30. T

These flights will be operated by Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The aircraft features lie-flat business class seats, each with direct aisle access, a dedicated premium economy cabin, and a spacious economy class.

Boost to tourism and business

The year-round operation is anticipated to strengthen both tourism and business ties between Western Australia and Japan. Japan has been a significant source of international visitors to Western Australia, with direct flights facilitating nearly 40,000 Japanese visitors in 2019, contributing approximately $71 million to the state’s economy.

The Western Australian Government, through the Aviation Recovery Fund and in partnership with Perth Airport, played a crucial role in securing the return of ANA’s service.

“Securing direct flights is a key pillar of our plan to boost tourism in Western Australia, helping to create local jobs and diversify our economy,” Premier Roger Cook said.

Flight schedules for the Perth-Tokyo route from 31 March 2025 are now available.

Innovations worth nothing

In related news, ANA has partnered with Nippon Sigmax Co., Ltd. to introduce an innovative storage bag for electronic devices. The bag is designed to safely contain electronic devices that may overheat or catch fire mid-flight, ensuring a higher level of safety for passengers and crew.

The development of this bag stems from a growing concern over the risks posed by lithium-ion batteries in electronic devices, which can become hazardous when damaged or improperly stored. ANA’s storage bag offers an immediate containment solution, significantly reducing potential in-flight emergencies.

The storage bag has already been trialed on ANA’s domestic and international routes, receiving positive feedback from crew members for its ease of use and effectiveness. It’s compact, lightweight, and user-friendly, making it a practical addition to ANA’s safety protocols.

“Our goal is to prioritise passenger and crew safety while adapting to modern challenges,” said an ANA representative.

“This innovation reflects our commitment to addressing safety concerns proactively and delivering peace of mind during flights.”
