Aussie holiday faves in firing line of Cyclone Kalmaegi; DFAT issues warning

Travellers heading to the Philippines this week have been warned of possible disruptions due to Typhoon Kalmaegi, which is sweeping through the central region of the country and tracking towards other popular Southeast Asian destinations.

Travellers heading to the Philippines this week have been warned of possible disruptions due to Typhoon Kalmaegi, which is sweeping through the central region of the country and tracking towards other popular Southeast Asian destinations.

The fast-moving storm made landfall around midnight in Southern Leyte on Monday before sweeping across Negros and Cebu, packing winds of up to 150 kilometres per hour and gusts to 185kph. Heavy rain and flooding have forced more than 150,000 people from their homes, the Associated Press reported.

Cebu, still reeling from last month’s 6.9-magnitude earthquake, has been particularly hard hit, while widespread power outages continue across affected provinces.

Authorities warn that Kalmaegi, the 20th tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines this year, could bring further disruption as it moves northwest towards the South China Sea, potentially affecting travel routes across the region in the coming days.

In light of the cyclone, the Australian Government has issued fresh travel advice for the Philippines along with Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

“Tropical Cyclone Kalmaegi is expected to impact Vietnam in the coming days,” the government’s Smartraveller website states in blanket advice for the region.

“Heavy rain and dangerous winds are expected, which may cause flash flooding and landslides. Transport, including airport closures and flight cancellations, along with essential services, may also be affected.

“If you’re travelling, contact your airline or travel provider. Check media for updates and follow the instructions of local authorities.”
