Anna Marie Chai has been named the new Intrepid Travel General Manager for Malaysia. Based in Kota Kinabalu, Chai steps into the role as Malaysia emerges as one of the company’s fastest-growing adventure markets.
Chai brings over 30 years of industry experience spanning destination development, cruise operations, and special interest programs across Borneo and Brunei. She most recently served as Area Director – Borneo at Destination Asia, where she led inbound strategies and partnerships across Sabah and Sarawak.
Mike Stewart, Intrepid Travel’s Regional General Manager for South East Asia, said Chai’s appointment reinforces Intrepid Travel’s commitment to local leadership and long-term growth.
“Anna brings a wealth of local expertise, leadership experience and passion for sustainable travel,” he said.
“With her at the helm, we’re confident in strengthening our partnerships and growing Intrepid’s footprint in Malaysia.”
How Malaysia fits Intrepid’s regional strategy
Malaysia’s adventure sector has grown steadily within Intrepid’s global network, driven by its rainforest reserves, indigenous cultural programs, and wildlife-rich itineraries, the company said.
Intrepid Travel’s bestselling Malaysian products include the 10-day Classic Borneo, 11-day Sabah Adventure, and nine-day Borneo Family Holiday. Each program showcases the biodiversity and local partnerships underpinning the brand’s model of low-impact, high-value travel.
Chai said joining Intrepid aligns with her long-held focus on connecting travellers to authentic regional experiences.

“Having spent my career connecting travellers to the heart of Borneo, I’m inspired by Intrepid’s commitment to creating real impact for travellers, communities and the environment,” she said.
“It’s a privilege to be part of a company that puts purpose at the centre of everything it does.”
Intrepid continues to invest in community-based tourism, sustainable transport solutions, and small-group experiences, key selling points for the Australian market focused on ethical, experience-led travel.
The company’s recent moves, including strengthening its Thailand and Vietnam offices, suggest an integrated regional strategy. For Australian partners, Malaysia’s inclusion in that framework adds depth to Southeast Asia product portfolios, especially for wildlife, cultural and family segments.
