“Iconic” Queensland island to be revived in major luxury resort redevelopment

One of Queensland’s most iconic island resorts is set to make a comeback, with Sydney-based La Vie Hotels & Resorts securing management rights for the long-awaited Lindeman Island redevelopment.

One of Queensland’s most iconic island resorts is set to make a comeback, with Sydney-based La Vie Hotels & Resorts securing management rights for the long-awaited Lindeman Island redevelopment.

The project, led by Singapore-based Well Smart Group, aims to breathe new life into the Whitsundays destination, which has been dormant since Cyclone Yasi struck in 2011. The first phase of works, including a new 50-metre jetty, is scheduled for completion in 2026.

Once home to Club Med, Lindeman Island was a favourite among Australian holidaymakers throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Now, the site is being reimagined as a five-star eco-luxury resort featuring around 200 rooms and nine suites, multiple dining venues, a luxury spa and gym and conference and wedding facilities.

La Vie Hotels & Resorts will not only manage the property but will also bring an international luxury brand to the island, expected to be announced in 2026.

Tourism and Events Queensland CEO Craig Davidson said the project would strengthen the state’s position as a leader in tropical island tourism.

“Our distinctive, pristine islands have helped shape Queensland’s standing as a global tourism leader and we are excited to see the revitalisation of Lindeman Island which has always been an iconic part of Queensland’s tourism story,” he said.

“This important investment, breathing new life into Lindeman Island, will bolster Queensland’s international reputation as a world-class holiday destination providing an exceptional visitor experience.”

The redevelopment is backed by Queensland’s Growing Futures Tourism Program, reflecting government support for sustainable tourism growth in the Whitsundays.

“La Vie Hotels & Resorts is thrilled to partner with Well Smart Group on this landmark project. Lindeman Island is more than a tropical paradise – it is a cornerstone of Queensland’s tourism heritage,” La Vie CEO Jerry Xu said.

“First developed for visitors in the 1920s, Lindeman became one of the earliest Whitsunday islands to offer accommodation, paving the way for Queensland’s rise as a global holiday destination.

“Lindeman Island holds a special place in Australia’s tourism history, and together we will deliver a world-class resort experience that celebrates the Whitsundays’ natural beauty.”
