Restoration of Vanuatu's most prominent hotel nears finish line; here's what to expect

One of Vanuatu’s most recognisable waterfront landmarks is almost ready to return, marking another step in the country’s broader tourism recovery.

One of Vanuatu’s most recognisable waterfront landmarks is almost ready to return, marking another step in the country’s broader tourism recovery.

The Grand Hotel & Casino in Port Vila is nearing completion of a major restoration project following the December 2024 earthquake.

The year-long rebuild is one of the most extensive in the property’s history.

Working with design partners Kas Makohon, Lukas Design, Vancorp and specialist structural teams from Vanuatu and New Zealand, the hotel has re-engineered its internal framework, installed lightweight structural materials and upgraded all major systems.

Grand Hotel & Casino Vanuatu Managing Director Bettina Mahieu described the project as a “reawakening” of one of Port Vila’s most beloved icons.

“The Grand has always been part of Port Vila’s heart,” Ms Mahieu said.

“This renewal is about more than buildings. It’s about confidence, continuity, and rekindling the magic that makes this place unforgettable.

“With its structural soul restored, The Grand is now ready to unveil its next chapter, a sanctuary of elegance, indulgence, and connection.”

Robert A Zagame, Director of Zagame Corporation, which operates the resort, described The Grand as “love embedded in structure”.

“We want to ensure The Grand doesn’t just return. It rises stronger, more beautiful, more alive,” he remarked.

“This isn’t a comeback, It’s a renewal, and it’s only the beginning.”

Located in Port Vila’s harbour, the renewed Grand will offer seventy-four rooms and suites with uninterrupted views, floor-to-ceiling windows, European marble ensuites and high-speed internet. New conference and events facilities will include five modular spaces designed for business and social gatherings.

Additional features will span a reimagined 90-seat Grand Dining Room, a Cabana Pool Bar & Lounge, upgraded casino facilities, 24-hour patrolled parking and direct access to Port Vila’s CBD and Lini Highway.

The hotel remains closed while final work continues. Reopening details are expected later this year.
