Hong Kong is back on Aussie radars as Australian visitor numbers jump almost 30%

Australian travel to Hong Kong bounced back in 2025 with visitor numbers up nearly 30 per cent year-on-year, signalling a strong rebound and renewed interest in the destination among Aussies.

Australian travel to Hong Kong bounced back in 2025 with visitor numbers up nearly 30 per cent year-on-year, signalling a strong rebound and renewed interest in the destination among Aussies.

Aussies are leading a resurgence in travel to Hong Kong with the latest Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) data showing Australian arrivals increased by 27 per cent in 2025 to reach 469,000 visitors.

December 2025 was a significantly strong month for Aussie travellers with the Special Administrative Region (SAR) recording the second-highest monthly number of Australian visitors in 12 years.

Globally, HKTB reported provisional full-year visitor arrivals for 2025 reached 49.9 million, representing a 12 per cent year-on-year increase.

Earlier in 2025, HK visitation from Australia outpaced direct air capacity, highlighting the destination’s popularity among Aussies.

By the end of the year, Hong Kong Airlines commenced direct routes to Sydney And Melbourne and Cathay Pacific resumed its seasonal Adelaide service, increasing airlift from Australia.

HKTB Australia, New Zealand & South Pacific Director Karen Macmillan said this increased air capacity and a strong events calendar helped drive visitor numbers.

“As a family-friendly destination, school holiday periods also performed strongly in the Australian market. Another key marketing and sales focus was Hong Kong as a stopover city of choice,” she said.

“With a dedicated local tourism office based in Sydney, our ANZ team managed strategic initiatives throughout 2025 across trade, consumer and cruise sectors to communicate Hong Kong’s appeal in terms of travel time, its breadth of attractions and a relatively high proportion of English speakers.”
