Air New Zealand pilots digital ID to cut queues and passport checks with Australian flights next

Air New Zealand passengers will soon enjoy a more seamless end-to-end journey after a successful Air NZ digital ID trial of new travel technology designed to reduce repeated document checks – and  Australia is next on the list.

Air New Zealand passengers will soon enjoy a more seamless end-to-end journey after a successful Air NZ digital ID trial of new travel technology designed to reduce repeated document checks – and  Australia is next on the list.

The digital ID will allow Air New Zealand passengers to add passport information to the Air NZ app, securely sharing verified identity details at online check-in, which is then used for biometric verification at other airport touchpoints.

The pilot trial also tested the use of Apple Wallet’s Digital ID and integrated the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD), making it easier for passengers to complete the online form.

The technology is designed to make travel easier by prefilling passport details, helping customers understand what documents they need for their trip and enabling verified information to be used across multiple touchpoints.

Instead of repeated document checks, a live facial scan is matched to the passport image shared from the passengers’ digital wallet at select airport touchpoints.

Air New Zealand Chief Customer & Digital Officer Jeremy O’Brien said privacy and consent are central to the pilot with customers in control of their information and security protocols throughout the process.

“Our ambition is to make travel easier from start to finish. That means fewer document checks, less time queueing and a smoother experience overall,” he said.

“This trial shows how digital identity could help create a more seamless journey, while also improving security through encrypted data and customer-controlled information sharing.”

Passengers took part in the Air NZ digital ID trial on a return Auckland-Hong Kong flight in March 2026, sharing their identity during check-in, which was then used for facial scans throughout the journey.

Australia is a key focus for the next Air NZ digital ID trial phase of testing across different ports.

Air New Zealand is also working closely with government agencies, aviation bodies, including IATA, and industry partners to further develop its digital ID solution.
